Galvanized roofing sheets are strong and durable, ready for all kinds of weather. In India, corrugated sheets are common across various terrains. However, without the proper maintenance, the durability of GC sheets can be compromised.
Corrugated roofing can last more than 50 years, provided it’s maintained properly. While it’s encouraged to check on your metal roof every few months, it’s better to set up a routine with the steps mentioned below.
Clean Regularly
Depending on the local environment, wash your galvanized roofing sheet every 3 to 12 months. This prevents the buildup of debris, dirt or other materials that rain can’t remove.
To remove dirt or debris, you could use a power washer or warm water, dish soap and microfiber cloth. Mix soap and water to create a diluted cleaning solution. Gently wipe all the metal panels of your roof with the cloth. Make sure to rinse it thoroughly.
Trim the Greenery
If there are plenty of trees around your property, make sure the branches don’t extend near or atop the roof. The branches could scrape the metal surface or fall, which can cause significant damage over time—particularly in bad weather.
Buff Out Scratches
Once you clean and clear your roof, it’s time for an exhaustive inspection. The first thing you should check is any blemishes or scratches. Check for scuffs, flaking, faded coating, and so on. If these flaws are mostly minor, you could buff it out or paint over it. For major defects, you may need to replace the affected sections with new Tata Shaktee roofing sheet panels.
It’s critical to check for these issues regularly, especially if your region gets annual storms. This helps prevent minor roof damage from escalating any further.
Check for Corrosion
During inspection, keep an eye out for spots of rust, which is a sign of corrosion. Check all openings on your roof, such as ventilation shafts that release heat and steam, which leads to corrosion.
If you notice small rust spots, you can remove them with a scrubbing solution. You can also use a protective coating or primer to prevent further rusting. However, if the rusting is severe, it’s better to replace your roofing.
Ensure No Contact
When different metals are in contact with each other, it can cause chemical reactions that lead to staining and damage. Double-check your roof during maintenance, even if it’s unlikely there are various types of metal on your roof. This will help prevent premature degradation and the possible system failure of your GC sheet.
